Samuel Ericsson: Cellist & Educator
Samuel Ericsson is a professional cellist with the New Japan Philharmonic in Tokyo and a dedicated cello teacher based in Kamagaya, Chiba. Originally from Sweden and raised in the U.S., Samuel brings a warm, international perspective to both his playing and teaching.
He began studying the cello at an early age with his mother, cellist Elizabeth Schultze, and continued under Savely Schuster, former associate principal cellist of the Saint Louis Symphony. Samuel went on to earn his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Cello Performance at the Cleveland Institute of Music, studying with Melissa Kraut and Mark Kosower, principal cellist of the Cleveland Orchestra.
As a performer, Samuel has appeared as a soloist with orchestras such as the Cape Cod Symphony and the New Japan Philharmonic. He has also performed widely as a chamber musician, sharing the stage with artists like Joel Smirnoff, Brandon Vamos, and Jennifer Gilbert.
Since moving to Japan in 2014, Samuel has been an active part of the country's classical music scene—first with the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra under Yutaka Sado, and now with the New Japan Philharmonic.
Samuel offers cello lessons for students of all levels—from beginners to advanced players, including those preparing for exams or competitions. With a foundation in both European and American musical traditions, he emphasizes strong technique and expressive artistry, fostering a lifelong love for music through his teaching.
